A little bit belated, I want to share two awesome encounters I had during my recent stay in Donsol. The sleepy town of Donsol is located in Sorsogon, Southern Luzon and is world famous for being regularly visited by whale sharks. The biggest fish of the world are known to come here between November and June with January until May being the peak season. The encounters with these gentle giants used to be very regular but lately encounters have become scarce. It seems like the whalesharks have found a new feeding ground which they prefer over Donsol. Since I have missed swimming with them while I was travelling in Australia, I definitely wanted to take my chances, even though it was already very late in the season. Read more

Pic of the Week 13
Now that my computer is running again, I want to continue with another Pic of the Week. This one was taken when Glenda and I returned from our day trip to Paguriran Lagoon. The weather had been rather mediocre the whole day and the lagoon hence couldn’t unfold its true beauty. I actually didn’t picture while we were there. We made the best of it and still had a good time. On the way back with our motorbike we passed this farmer, stoically plowing his field with the help of his ox which is here called a carabao. I actually already saw the guy on the way there and told myself to definitely take this picture if he’ll still be there later. Fortunately he still was and I took the shot – the one and only on that day.
Help! Laptop Breakdown
Hello friends, followers and readers,
this time no pictures and no travel tales from this side but a cal for your help. My computer recently broke down and it seems that it doesn’t get any electricity. Since the charger is working, I think it is the mainboard inside which has a problem. I know that this is hard to fix and the spare parts can be hard to come by. I will be in Manila tomorrow for a whole day and then off to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for about 5 days.
Does anyone know a good and most importantly quick repair store? It should be specialized for Lenovo products. I think I will have better chances in KL since I have more time there. But I am willing to try in Manila as well.
Thanks for your help guys and sorry for the not so recent updates from now on. I will catch up on those once the machine is running again. What a bummer….
Greetings,
Philipp
Surfing a Secret Spot in Catanduanes
After I had split with Dolf and Chris, I decided to extend my stay in the Philippines and go back to Gubat, Sorsogon. During our stay there for Holy Week I had made good friends who were proposing to host me for a while. Life in Gubat is relaxed and laid back and the best about it is that you can surf a good variety of surf breaks. And that is exactly what we extensively did for the following few days after my return. We surfed the local reefs in the mornings and the beach break in the afternoon or vice versa. So good to get that needed water time and practice after not having surfed for quiet a while. However, after a while the waves slowly got smaller and smaller and the so called flat spell was starting to take its toll on us. Everyone was getting nervous and imbalanced, anxiously awaiting the next swell. So what to do? Read more
A tribute to my travel mates!
It has been more than two months travelling with my mates Dolf and Chris from Belgium and time has been flying by. What started with a brief small talk in a remote fishermen’s village in Laos, marked the start of an incredible adventure and finally turned into true friendship. Although we have split already a couple of weeks ago, I still want to appreciate our shared trip with a separate post.
I like travelling alone but at the time I met the guys in Laos, I was a little fed up with it and more than happy to meet like minded people. I mean you meet a lot of people while travelling, especially when backpacking. But to be honest, especially on the classic South East Asia Loop I found a lot of these people pretty annoying and just not on the same wavelength. All the more I instantly enjoyed the company of Dolf and Chris. We shared the same thoughts, the same interests and the same style of travelling. It was great I am sure traveling the route we have by myself would have been a completely different experience. Read more
Pic of the Week 12
My local friends from Gubat took me on a surfing trip to the island of Catanduanes, part of the Bicol Region in Luzon. Catanduanes features one of the best breaks of the Philippines, the infamous surfspot called “Majestic”. Since it was flat on the mainland, we wanted to hit Majestic and try our luck. Unfortunately even that swell magnet was not working when we made it there. What to do? Thanks to a hint of some local surfers, we chartered a boat to a hidden spot not too far away. With rather low expectations we were greeted by clean, shoulder high sets rolling in over a stone / coral reef. It was unbelievable. I think the whole country was flat during that time but this spot was working flawlessly. We surfed there for the next three days and had so much fun. It was just us and some local surfers who tagged along. No crowds, just friendship, great waves and great rides. In the picture you can see local surfer Jomarie Tanael setting up one of his aggressive bottom turns. The guys there are so good. An article about the trip will follow soon.
Getting “wrecked” in Coron
Our last stop before returning to Manila was the Island of Busuanga and its main town of Coron. The perspective of some more island hopping but especially some of the world’s best wreck diving made us take the long boat journey from El Nido upon ourselves. What was supposed to be a trip of about 8 hours, turned into a 12 hour odyssey. After 4 hours Dolf and I got sick – not because of the rough sea or the boat being to shaky. No, we figured that we both had something bad for breakfast and it felt terrible. Anxious to arrive in Coron, we noticed that the boat turned around all of a sudden. Apparently another boat of the same company had engine problems and needed to be towed into Coron Harbor. The timing for a maneuver like that could not have been worse.
Islands, Lagoons and Beaches – Palawan Dreaming in El Nido
Exploring Palawans Underground was great and chilling at Sabang Beach was also nice but now it was time to see the things we had came here for. Rumors of white beaches, turquoise blue waters, deserted lagoons and beaches had lead us to magical Palawan. We wanted to see for ourselves what is true about these stories and what is not and made our way all the way up to El Nido. The jeepney ride from Sabang took us four hours and was quiet rough. Recommended by fellow travelers and locals alike, we expected a beautiful, lazy and laid back town by the coast. Our first impression was everything but that. Read more
Pic of the Week 11
I post this picture in the light of recent events here in the Philippines. On May 7th 5 mountaineers, among those three from my country Germany, died on Mt. Mayon, the most active volcano of the Philippines. The eruption happened without warning and the mountaineers and their guide were killed by falling rocks due to an phreatic eruption . I was in Legazpi just 2 days after the event and went up Daraga Church to see how the volcano looks like. At that point the rescue team was still trying to transport the corpses down the volcano.
The incident shows that a volcano is not just a regular mountain, even if the last eruption was a long time ago. We are dealing with mother nature and unfortunately we tend to lose those encounters once it shows its real power. May the dead mountaineers rest in peace.
Going Underground in Puerto Princessa.
Finally Palawan. The last station me and the guys would travel together and we came with high expectations after hearing so many good things about this region. Our minds were filled with images of crystal clear lagoons, white beaches, secluded islands, rugged landscapes, coconut groves, the bluest waters and a sense of solitude. But first we were supposed to go underground – into the world famous Underground River of Puerto Princessa / Sabang, one of the seven new wonders of the world and an Unesco World Heritage Site.
